What Are Planetary Transits?
Planetary transits are the ongoing movements of planets through the zodiac and how they relate to the positions in your birth chart. While your natal chart shows your inherent potentials and tendencies, transits reveal when those potentials are activated and what themes are currently playing out in your life.
Think of your birth chart as a map of your personality and life path, and transits as the weather that affects how you travel that path. A challenging transit might bring obstacles that push you to grow, while a harmonious transit can open doors and bring ease.
Transits operate on all time scales — from the Moon's quick daily movements that affect your mood, to Pluto's slow generational journey that transforms entire societies. The slower planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) create the most significant long-term themes, while faster planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars) trigger shorter events and daily experiences.
How Are Transits Calculated?
Transit calculation begins with your birth data — date, time, and location — which determines the exact positions of all planets at the moment you were born. This becomes your natal chart baseline.
The calculator then computes planetary positions for your chosen transit date and time. It measures the angular distance between each transit planet and each natal planet, identifying when they form major aspects: conjunctions (0°), sextiles (60°), squares (90°), trines (120°), or oppositions (180°).
Each aspect has an orb (allowable deviation from exact), which determines how wide the window of influence is. Tighter orbs (within 1-2 degrees) indicate stronger, more precise activations, while wider orbs (up to 8-10 degrees for some aspects) show broader thematic influences.
What Do Transits Reveal?
Conjunction (0°)
Two planets merge their energies, creating intense focus and new beginnings in the areas they touch
Opposition (180°)
Polarity and awareness — planets pull in opposite directions, demanding balance and integration
Trine (120°)
Harmony and flow — natural talents activate with ease, bringing opportunities and positive momentum
Square (90°)
Tension and challenge — friction that forces growth, action, and resolution of inner conflicts
Sextile (60°)
Opportunity and cooperation — subtle openings that require initiative to activate and develop
Return
A planet returns to its birth position, marking the start of a new cycle and fresh beginnings
